Projects

The Birmingham Astronomical Society is activly involved in a number of exciting projects.

Observing Projects

The Birmingham Astronomical Society has a number of active observers. We collate our observations.

Observing Mars

Despite Mars being one of our nearest neighbours, it is frustratingly infrequent that we get an opportunity to view Mars in close up. The planets’ orbits result in the Earth and Mars playing a kind of cat and mouse with Mars most of the time being in the far distance. Every 2.1 years however the Earth catches up and we get an opportunity to study Mars’ surface features. Between December 2009 and May 2010, we‘ll once again have this long awaited opportunity.

Public Outreach - Bringing the night sky closer to the public.

Bringing astronomy to a wider public audience has always been a central activity for Birmingham Astronomical Society. We usually hold 2 star-parties each year at Lickey Hills Visitor Centre as part of British National Science Week and World Space Week. The public is encouraged to come along to these events and see the night sky as they may never have seen it before.

Mirror grinding and building telescopes.

Over the years, Birmingham Astronomical Society has helped amateur astronomers grind, polish and aluminise over a hundred mirrors. We have facilities to produce mirrors from 4 inches to over 12 inches in diameter.

Astronomical Library

We have over a thousand books covering all aspects of both practical and theoretical astronomy. It is a valuable reference for Members and, as every book has recently been catalogued onto computer records, you can now browse the categories easily for yourself. Thanks to Derek and Ann Ford for all their hard work!

Visiting Societies

Birmingham Astronomical Society is always happy to join with other societies in the Midlands(astronomical and non-astronomical) to hold mutually beneficial events. We arrange both solar and night sky observing sessions and give talks on request.
If your society is interested in arranging a joint activity then please do contact us.

Observatory

Sadly, since the destruction of our Priory School Observatory by vandals in July 2005, we have been without a dedicated Observatory.
However, we are currently investigating various options and hope to be able to confirm plans for a new site in the near future.
